Originally I was going to write a very long article explaining several different theories and half-a-dozen methods for scanning in excruciating depth. Then I realized no one would read it. Instead I have provided a basic article, with the possibility of releasing a longer, more manual-like, text in the distant future. In this article you will encounter basic methods for scanning with little accompanying theory. This article is meant for practical application, not for filling up your head with interesting but ultimately unimportant ideas.

The method I will discuss is using a “blank mind” to obtain otherwise elusive information. This can be initially difficult, but is very effective with practice. I will further provide basic troubleshooting for those just starting out and go over basic pro’s and con’s of this method for your consideration. Please note: this is a relatively passive method of obtaining information psionically. It takes practice and effort to be able to receive specific information in this way.

Blanking your Mind for Scanning

Scanning with a blank mind is, in simple terms, clearing your head of mental clatter and clutter to allow the information already there to be useful. Ideally someone pursuing this method will have had some practice with meditation, which is of great benefit in clearing the mind. With extensive practice meditation alone can become an experience which leads to enlightenment in and of itself. For most psions relatively full trances will be necessary to completely quiet the mind, but for those with naturally calm minds, who are so skilled with meditation that they zone out at their whim, full trances are superfluous. Trances can be achieved through quiet or calming meditation, or head-banging techno-esque trance music, and several methods in the middle, I will include a few basic methods to achieve a blank mind here.

Basic Meditation

Focal point

The most basic of all meditation is that using your breath to focus upon. This is most commonly done by breathing in slow calm breaths for four mental counts, holding it for four mental counts and slowly exhaling, letting tension and thoughts exit with the breath, holding for four mental counts, and repeating, eventually working into a relaxed rhythm that requires no conscious attention to maintain. This form of meditation is taught in hundreds of paradigms and is the classic way to be introduced to meditation.

Many, however, have difficulty concentrating on something within themselves and fully ‘letting go’ of conscious thoughts at the same time. They end up assuming conscious control of their breathing. What can be more effective for these individuals is the use of a candle, or anything which “catches the eye’s focus” easily, to focus upon, instead of breathing. Have you ever had a moment when you’ve stared at something and your conscious mind “turned off”? Replicating that is the idea here. Simply stare at a flame or other object while remaining calm, and let your conscious thoughts drift and eventually dissipate.

You may be asking at this point “Hold up… I want to be a drooling idiot to scan something?” If you are my only reply is “Yay!” No, you don’t want to simply be a drooling idiot, alone that is only being a drooling idiot, and not helpful in the least. Your goal is to turn off all those thoughts which are of no use to you, things like “My nose itches.” And “I wonder what hamsters dream about.” By zoning out (trancing) you shut those useless thoughts out quite effectively, you must however do so with the intention to gather those tidbits of data that are useful to you to actually gain knowledge from this state. At this very moment you have things going through your head subliminally which constitute a significant knowledge of the happenings around you, and anywhere your attention is. Why this is so is way beyond the scope of this article, but it is safe to assume it is so, and most useful to you to assume it is so.

Progressive Relaxation

Progressive relaxation serves many purposes. Usually it is found in articles on astral projection; here it serves a somewhat related, but different, purpose. By relaxing the body you can stop virtually all of the signals it sends you. (“I itch.” “I’m warm.” “My neck is stiff.” “I am wearing socks.” etc.) This is useful in bringing you that much closer to a still mind. For those with naturally calm minds this is probably a plenty sufficient step to take conscious, and loud unconscious, mental activity low enough to allow useful information to become apparent.

Progressive relaxation is really quite simple, but many have some trouble initially grasping the concept. The idea is to turn off and relax your body, bit by bit, starting with your toes, ending with your scalp. To do this many visualize. Some picture the words “relax” or “sleep” printed on their body parts, others picture stress and wakefulness being pushed out of the body part with each exhalation and relaxation pulled in with each inhalation. Both approaches are effective, but one or the other may be more so for you as an individual.

Basic Trancing


Trancing by overload is a preferred method for novices. “Overloading” is usually done by listening to and trying to consciously dissect and analyze complex music. Trance is an entire genre of music these days and there are free online trance “radio stations” which play trance music all the time. Trances are not unlike the use of focal meditation, overloading trances are just an equal opposite, of sorts. Overloading trances, as the name and method imply, overwhelm your conscious mind, taking it out of the picture and allowing the subconscious mind greater prominence in your skull. The major downside to overload trances is that many more people can’t ‘trance out’ in this way than can’t trance out using its opposite. Also, many get headaches from listening to trance music, which is often quite heavy. On the plus side, this method takes less time, typically, and is very useful for fairly chaotic people with limited patience.

Triggering Trances

Triggering a trance requires several things. Most importantly it requires lots of experience with trancing. Second most importantly it requires trancing in the same fashion repeatedly. And finally you must do so using a physical or mental gesture every time, so that you associate the gesture with the trance, and thereby enter the trance by making the gesture. For those of you confused by what a mental gesture is, as opposed to a physical one (such as making a fist) I will explain them now. A mental gesture is a specific thought which is repeatable but not random. An example is solving a Sudoku puzzle mentally, or “dialing” a numerical code in your mind. In this instance trancing out while thinking a numerical code might be helpful. To do this, just picture any numerical code (###-##-####) while you’re trancing out. By associating the decline in mental noise with the visualization you will eventually experience this decline just by visualizing this code.


At this point you should have a good idea of how to clear your mind to allow easier reception of already present information. This alone isn’t scanning, however, it’s just being receptive. Actual scanning is a step beyond this. There are several ways to approach a scan. First of all you can “reach out” to a target, which is much easier than it sounds, especially when you’re in a trance and not thinking about it. And secondly you can focus on a picture, or a screen name or word in a chat room, a set of co-ordinates, or on any number of other things tied into a person and receive information from the given target. The first is a more active approach, the second more passive. Both will serve and both have appropriate times for use. Active scanning is appropriate for claiming information you need right now about a given moment. (example :”What color is the construct?” Actively scan it “It is red.”) Passive scanning is more appropriate for ongoing reception, like monitoring the actions of a construct. (example: “What is it doing?” “It’s spinning, and now it is changing colors… and now it is spinning the other direction.”)

There are many ways to scan, as many techniques as there are people to use them, the main goal of this article is to give you the tools to be able to easily use one of the basic methods presented, or to help you in using another. Blanking your mind will nearly always improve your results in scanning.


There are many common issues new psions face when scanning and taking part in many other psionic acts. I will address several common issues right now.

1) Issue: “I don’t see anything unusual when I trance… What gives?”

Answer: “You shouldn’t see things, especially initially. You may in certain cases, much further down the road, want visual information, however it is not essential and more difficult to control and receive than the flashes intuition and tactile feelings you are more likely to receive in a trance. When you do need to see something this is not the method you should use, in those instances you should use remote viewing, astral projection or another more visually oriented style of ‘ESP’.”

2) Issue: “I can’t relax (or I can’t overload) and relaxing my body doesn’t quiet my mind. What should I do?”

Answer: “Simply try the opposite method, try to overload if you can’t use focal meditation, try focal meditation if you can’t trance. If neither works, then you may as well abandon this method of obtaining unconscious information, or assume you’re doing something wrong. Re-read the article in full and be sure you understand the material presented.”

3) Issue: “This still doesn’t work, I’ve re-read everything, I understand it but it does not work! What should I do?”

Answer: “Try another method.”

Pros and Cons


This method is relatively easy-to-learn and easy-to-use. Anyone who can zone out can learn to use this method. This method is very newbie-friendly and uncomplicated.


This method is very simple, and cannot support many advanced needs by itself. One must be more assertive than the scope of this article covers to achieve many advanced results. While the method is easy-to-learn, it is at best only a first step in reaching sensory goals for most individuals.
